GETTING STARTED

Ready to Play Rugby on the Sunshine Coast? Here’s What You Need to Know

Looking to join the Brothers Rugby Club SC community and get on the field? Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the sport, here’s a rundown of what you need to know about playing rugby on the Sunshine Coast.

Who Can Play?

Rugby is a sport for everyone! The Sunshine Coast Rugby Union (SCRU) offers competitions for a wide range of ages and abilities. The junior program starts at U5 through to U17 for boys and U18 for girls, the senior program is for U18 and over. In addition Brothers offers an All Abilities program.

  • Junior XV’s (Mixed): Teams start as co-ed from  U6 through to U13 with boys only teams from U14 to U17.
  • Junior Girls 7’s: Girls only teams playing 7’s rugby start at U12 through to U18 (new in SZN ’26
  • Seniors: Brothers field teams in a variety of senior grades, including Senior Women and Senior Mens A-Grade, Reserve Grade, and Cricks Cup – Third Grade.

    How Long is the Season?

The rugby season on the Sunshine Coast runs from April to September, with sign on in December and January, preseason training starting at the end of January and preseason games in March. The season includes a regular season with a finals series for U12 and up.

How Many Games Will I Play?

The number of games you will play can vary depending on your age group and grade.

    • Junior Teams (U6 – U18): These teams typically play 14 – 16 regular-season games.
    • Senior Teams: These competitions usually involve a double round-robin format, which means you will play each team twice during the regular season. This can result in a season of approximately 14-15 games, not including finals.

    When and where is training?

Training is held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons / evenings at the “Barracks” part of the Sunshine Coast Stadium precinct at 320 Nicklin Way, Bokarina. Juniors U6 – U9 generally train one session per week on either a Tuesday or Thursday, whilst U10 – Junior Colts will train both Tuesday and Thursday with times starting from 4pm. The exact time of your team training will be arranged by your coach and manager at the beginning of the season. Seniors will train both Tuesday and Thursday evening.

    What Do I Need?

When you register with Brothers, you’ll receive a lot of what you need to play, including a training jersey, playing shorts and socks. It is expected that you wear a Brothers polo to game day which is an option (Option 1) as part of your rego for new players. You’ll also be provided with a game jersey to wear on game day.

However, to get ready for training and games, you will need to get a few things for yourself:

    • Boots (Cleats): A good pair of rugby or football boots is essential for grip and traction on the field.
    • Mouthguard: A mouthguard is a strongly recommended safety item for all players.
    • Headgear (Optional but Recommended): While not required, headgear can provide extra protection during scrums, rucks, and tackles.
    • Training Gear: Wear your training jersey, playing shorts and socks to training plus bring your other gear (boots etc).
    • Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is key! Bring a water bottle to all training sessions and games.

How do I receive communication / information pre and during the season?

The Brothers website is a great source of information providing information on age grades, different game types (junior mixed, girls 7’s etc), ground information and game rules.

The club leverages the Stack Team app for all internal club communications and you can stay up to date with club news by following our instagram & Facebook pages.
